A new Bishop is appointed for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse by Pope Francis. Bishop-elect Douglas John Lucia, from the Diocese of Ogdensburg, will become the 11th Bishop of Syracuse. He will succeed Bishop RobertCunningham who has served the community since 2009. According to a statement released by the Diocese Tuesday morning, Lucia is 56 years old and is from Plattsburgh, NY. He was ordained in 1989 and has spent his ministry in communities around New York State, including Watertown, Ogdensburg, and East Aurora. Bishop-elect Lucia will oversee the faith of more than 220,000 Catholics who reside in seven counties of the diocese covering nearly 5,500 square miles. Bishop Cunningham submitted his resignation on his 75th birthday in June of 2018, as is required by Canon Law. He will continue to serve as the Apostolic Administrator until Bishop-elect Lucia’s ordination and installation. Bishop-elect Lucia will be ordained at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, located in downtown Syracuse, at a "to be determined" date. We congratulate Bishop-elect Lucia and we pray for his pastoral ministry with us in our diocese.
